A case of stings in humans caused bySclerodermus sp. in Italy J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Papini,Roberto Amerigo.
In the last years, stings of Sclerodermus species in humans have been sporadically reported in Italy. In order to draw attention to these bethylid wasps of medical importance, we report the case of documentedSclerodermus sp. stings on the dorsum, abdomen, arms, and thighs of a 40-year-old man and his wife. The sting sites developed raised red itchy rash. The source of environmental contamination was identified in a worm-eaten sofa purchased from a used furniture dealer and placed in the living room about a month and half earlier. The lesions on the man and his wife rapidly healed within 3 to 4 days once they left the house and treatment for the lesions was instituted. Physicians, dermatologists, medical and public health entomologists, as well as specific...

Agriculture and Income Distribution: Insights from a SAM of the Italian Economy AgEcon
Rocchi, Benedetto; Romano, Donato; Stefani, Gianluca.
The paper presents the results of the first SAM analysis of the agricultural sector in Italy. A SAM of the Italian economy has been properly modified in order to focus the analysis on agriculture. Two type of analysis have been carried out: (i) a multiplier analysis, and (ii) an assessment of the distributive impacts of different agricultural policies. This paper proposes also a new method for disaggregating the institutional sectors and production factors in order to analyze income distribution within the economy, with special emphasis on the agricultural sector. Main results are: (i) "fully" decoupled income supporting schemes (transfers to agricultural households) are the most equitable interventions and determine a perfect targeting of the distributive...

Angels of the First Class: The Anthroposophic Art of Ernesto Genoni, Goetheanum, 1924 Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Ernesto Genoni (1885-1975) was the pioneer of biodynamics in Australia. The exhibition, Angels of the First Class, presents art that he produced under the tutelage of Rudolf Steiner at Dornach, Switzerland, in the year of Steiner's Agriculture Course. A century ago, Ernesto joined the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and served as a stretcher bearer on the killing fields of the Western Front in 1916, in the battles of the Somme and Pozières. In 1923, Ernesto wrote to Rudolf Steiner from Italy offering his labour for advancing the Anthroposophy project. Ernesto arrived at Dornach early in 1924 and successfully applied to Dr Steiner for acceptance into the First Class (Erste Klasse der Freien Hochschule für Geisteswissenschaft). The First Class was Steiner’s...

Australia's original Demeter Farm (1934-1954) Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Two members of Rudolf Steiner’s Experimental Circle were the first to establish a Demeter Farm in Australia. In 1934 Ileen Macpherson (1898-1984) and Ernesto Genoni (1885-1964) founded their ‘Demeter Biological Farm’ on the Princes Highway in Dandenong, Victoria. They were guided by Steiner’s book of his Agriculture Course (1924). They managed their 40 acre farm using biodynamic (BD) practices for the next two decades. Ileen and Ernesto pioneered biodynamic and thereby organic farming in Australia. They were the first to adopt the name ‘Demeter’ for an Australian BD enterprise. This was before the terms ‘biodynamic farming’ and ‘organic farming’ had any currency (which date from 1938 and 1940 respectively). They worked their BD farm for two decades until...

Biodynamic agriculture shows steady global growth Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
New figures released by Demeter-International reveal the steady global growth of biodynamic agriculture. Certified biodynamic hectares are up 2% (from 144,497 to 147,495 hectares), biodynamic processors are up 5% (from 456 to 478), and biodynamic distributors are up 3% (from 185 to 190). The number of countries with Demeter-International certified biodynamic activity increased from 48 to 52. Croatia and Peru enter the list with newly reported biodynamic farms, and Bulgaria and Ukraine enter the list with new biodynamic distributors. There is considerable volatility in the statistics, with most countries reporting changes in the statistics for 2012 compared to the previous year. The three leading countries, based on biodynamic hectares, are Germany (with...

CAP Reform and the Mediterranean EU-Member States AgEcon
Borresch, Rene; Kavallari, Aikaterini; Schmitz, P. Michael.
In the previous years the Mediterranean Member States of the EU came across the Reform of the CAP and especially last year faced the second wave of the Reform for three typical Mediterranean products, namely cotton, olive oil and tobacco. In this paper a partial equilibrium model is used to simulate the impacts of decoupling, as a key point of the decided CAP Reform. The second wave of the Reform appears to be of crucial importance for the southern EU countries and although the producer's income is reduced, there are positive welfare effects.

CATCHING-UP TRAJECTORIES IN THE WINE SECTOR: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CHILE, ITALY AND SOUTH AFRICA AgEcon
Cusmano, Lucia; Morrison, Andrea; Rabellotti, Roberta.
From a development perspective an investigation of the changes that have occurred in the wine industry is of particular interest because it provides evidence on how emerging economies have been able to acquire significant shares of the international market in a dynamic sector. Based on novel empirical evidence as well as secondary sources, this paper shows that emerging countries with diverse institutional models and innovation strategies, have been driving the process of technological modernization and product standardization. Newcomers in the wine sector have responded particularly effectively to changes in consumption habits, and in aligning emerging scientific approaches with institutional building efforts and successful marketing strategies.

Consumer motivations in the purchase of organic food. A means-end approach Organic Eprints
Zanoli, Prof Raffaele; Naspetti, Dr. Simona.
The paper presents partial results from an Italian study on consumer perception and knowledge of organic food and related behaviour. The means-end chain model was used to link attributes of products to the needs of consumers. In order to provide insights into consumer motivation in purchasing organic products, 60 respondents were interviewed using “hard” laddering approach to the measurement of means-end chains. The results (ladders) of these semi-qualitative interviews are coded, aggregated and presented in a set of hierarchical structured value maps. Consumer cognitive structures at different level of experience are reported and discussed. Even if organic products are perceived as difficult to find and expensive, most of consumers judge them...

Consumer Purchasing Behavior in Response to Media Coverage of Avian Influenza AgEcon
Beach, Robert H.; Zhen, Chen.
Consumer concerns regarding food safety can have substantial impacts on their consumption patterns. Thus, understanding consumer response to food safety information is important for quantifying consumer response to food safety events, predicting market impacts, and developing appropriate risk communication strategies. Flexible demand systems have gained much popularity in analyzing effects of food safety outbreaks on consumer demand because of their ability to capture interactions between the demand for substitutable and complementary goods. Using Italian scanner data on meat sales, we show the economic importance of accounting for the impact of avian flu outbreaks on group expenditures for meats in a dynamic Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) specification...

Cost and energy evaluation of organic cauliflower in sole crop and living mulch systems Organic Eprints
Ortolani, Livia; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Campanelli, Gabriele; Bavec, Martina; Bavec, Franc; von Fragstein, Peter; Bergmam, Astrid; Leteo, Fabrizio; Canali, Stefano.
This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. Different organic systems have a different proportion in using the two inputs depending on the specific farm strategy.

Current issues in organic food: Italy Organic Eprints
Canavari, Maurizio.
This chapter suggests some relevant topics for further analysis of organic farming and organic food markets in Italy. The discussion regards different aspects, taking into consideration farmer issues, supply chain issues, consumer issues, policy and trade issues, including farmers’ income, sustainable development and international trade. All these aspects show important implications with organic agriculture. A final section takes into consideration further emerging issues, linked to globalisation and to the need to foster further research activities in support of the diffusion of organic farming not only in Italy, but also in developing countries.

Dalmore Farm: Victoria’s first biodynamic farming venture (1933-1934) Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Dalmore Farm (1933-1934) was Victoria’s first biodynamic farming venture. A letter, written in Milan, Italy, in Italian in 1934 by Rosa Genoni (1867-1954) \ enables details of this venture to be finally revealed. Rosa wrote of her youngest brother, Ernesto Genoni (1885-1975): “Now Ernesto … is at Dalmore, a farm of my brother Marino (the father of the boy [Alfredo Genoni (1913-1999)] who was sent to us years ago from Australia and we sent him to Dornach where he stayed for two years, and two more to the school at Stuttgart) and in part by my brother Angelo, who asked Ernesto to go and organise the farm biologically”. “Ernesto had a small wooden house built there for his use. It has only two rooms but it must be fairly comfortable, as Ernesto invited...

Decapod crustaceans from the Oligocene of the Ligure Piemontese Basin, northern Italy Naturalis
Angeli, Antonio De; Marangon, Sergio.
Lithologically, the decapod-bearing levels of Rupelian (Oligocene) age in the Ligure Piemontese Basin, are characterized by an alternation of greyish blue marls with nodular elements and silt-rich, occasionally sandy, marls. The fossil studied for the present note have been collected mainly from pebbles or nodules which were eroded out of the higher levels exposed of this sedimentary complex, referred to as the ‘Formazione di Molare’. These levels overli the ‘Formazioni continentali delle Brecce di Costa Cravara e Pianfolco’, studied by Charrier et al. (1964) and dated as Early Rupelian. The levels yielding brachyuran fossils were attributed by Allasinaz (1987) to the transition between the ‘Formazione di Molare’ and the overlying ‘Marne di Rigoroso’, and...

In April 2010, the sampling of juvenile Pacific cupped oysters originating from France was undertaken from a farm located off the coast of the Marche region in Italy. Samples were sent to the national reference laboratory for mollusc diseases for bacteriological, histological, electron microscopical and molecular analysis. Classical and Real-Time PCR indicated the presence of the microvariant (OsHV-1 mu var) of Type 1 Ostreid Herpes virus (OsHV-1) despite the absence of clinical and pathological signs normally associated with the presence of this variant. Further molecular and sequencing analysis revealed the presence of OsHV-1 par and OsHV-1 DNA in one oyster indicating that simultaneous detection of both viruses is possible. This is the first report of...

Direct payments, crop insurance and the volatility of farm income. Some evidence in France and in Italy AgEcon
Enjolras, Geoffroy; Capitanio, Fabian; Aubert, Magali; Adinolfi, Felice.
Volatility of farm income represents a major challenge for farm management and the design of public policies. This paper measures the extent to which risk management tools, especially direct payments and crop insurance, can significantly reduce crop income volatility in France and in Italy. We use an original dataset of 9,555 farms for the period 2003-2007 drawn up from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and three different econometric models to explain the volatility of crop income. The results are contrasted between the specialization of the farms and the two countries: Italian farms use management tools (CAP payments and crop insurance) so as to improve their income and to reduce its volatility (crop insurance, inputs). French farms use the same...
