| In the last years, stings of Sclerodermus species in humans have been sporadically reported in Italy. In order to draw attention to these bethylid wasps of medical importance, we report the case of documentedSclerodermus sp. stings on the dorsum, abdomen, arms, and thighs of a 40-year-old man and his wife. The sting sites developed raised red itchy rash. The source of environmental contamination was identified in a worm-eaten sofa purchased from a used furniture dealer and placed in the living room about a month and half earlier. The lesions on the man and his wife rapidly healed within 3 to 4 days once they left the house and treatment for the lesions was instituted. | The paper presents the results of the first SAM analysis of the agricultural sector in Italy. A SAM of the Italian economy has been properly modified in order to focus the analysis on agriculture. Two type of analysis have been carried out: (i) a multiplier analysis, and (ii) an assessment of the distributive impacts of different agricultural policies. This paper proposes also a new method for disaggregating the institutional sectors and production factors in order to analyze income distribution within the economy, with special emphasis on the agricultural sector. | Ernesto Genoni (1885-1975) was the pioneer of biodynamics in Australia. The exhibition, Angels of the First Class, presents art that he produced under the tutelage of Rudolf Steiner at Dornach, Switzerland, in the year of Steiner's Agriculture Course. A century ago, Ernesto joined the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and served as a stretcher bearer on the killing fields of the Western Front in 1916, in the battles of the Somme and Pozières. In 1923, Ernesto wrote to Rudolf Steiner from Italy offering his labour for advancing the Anthroposophy project. | Two members of Rudolf Steiner’s Experimental Circle were the first to establish a Demeter Farm in Australia. In 1934 Ileen Macpherson (1898-1984) and Ernesto Genoni (1885-1964) founded their ‘Demeter Biological Farm’ on the Princes Highway in Dandenong, Victoria. They were guided by Steiner’s book of his Agriculture Course (1924). They managed their 40 acre farm using biodynamic (BD) practices for the next two decades. Certified biodynamic hectares are up 2% (from 144,497 to 147,495 hectares), biodynamic processors are up 5% (from 456 to 478), and biodynamic distributors are up 3% (from 185 to 190). | The Palaearctic species Caenopachys hartigii (Ratzeburg, 1848) has been collected in the National Park of Pollino (S Italy), which is the first exact confirmation for the Italian fauna. A brief nomenclatural history of the genus Caenopachys Foerster, 1862, is given, its status is discussed and it is elevated from synonymy. | From a development perspective an investigation of the changes that have occurred in the wine industry is of particular interest because it provides evidence on how emerging economies have been able to acquire significant shares of the international market in a dynamic sector. Based on novel empirical evidence as well as secondary sources, this paper shows that emerging countries with diverse institutional models and innovation strategies, have been driving the process of technological modernization and product standardization. Newcomers in the wine sector have responded particularly effectively to changes in consumption habits, and in aligning emerging scientific approaches with institutional building efforts and successful marketing strategies. |

| The paper presents partial results from an Italian study on consumer perception and knowledge of organic food and related behaviour. The means-end chain model was used to link attributes of products to the needs of consumers. In order to provide insights into consumer motivation in purchasing organic products, 60 respondents were interviewed using “hard” laddering approach to the measurement of means-end chains. The results (ladders) of these semi-qualitative interviews are coded, aggregated and presented in a set of hierarchical structured value maps. | This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. | This chapter suggests some relevant topics for further analysis of organic farming and organic food markets in Italy. The discussion regards different aspects, taking into consideration farmer issues, supply chain issues, consumer issues, policy and trade issues, including farmers’ income, sustainable development and international trade. All these aspects show important implications with organic agriculture. A final section takes into consideration further emerging issues, linked to globalisation and to the need to foster further research activities in support of the diffusion of organic farming not only in Italy, but also in developing countries. |

| Lithologically, the decapod-bearing levels of Rupelian (Oligocene) age in the Ligure Piemontese Basin, are characterized by an alternation of greyish blue marls with nodular elements and silt-rich, occasionally sandy, marls. The fossil studied for the present note have been collected mainly from pebbles or nodules which were eroded out of the higher levels exposed of this sedimentary complex, referred to as the ‘Formazione di Molare’. | In April 2010, the sampling of juvenile Pacific cupped oysters originating from France was undertaken from a farm located off the coast of the Marche region in Italy. Samples were sent to the national reference laboratory for mollusc diseases for bacteriological, histological, electron microscopical and molecular analysis. Classical and Real-Time PCR indicated the presence of the microvariant (OsHV-1 mu var) of Type 1 Ostreid Herpes virus (OsHV-1) despite the absence of clinical and pathological signs normally associated with the presence of this variant. | Volatility of farm income represents a major challenge for farm management and the design of public policies. This paper measures the extent to which risk management tools, especially direct payments and crop insurance, can significantly reduce crop income volatility in France and in Italy. We use an original dataset of 9,555 farms for the period 2003-2007 drawn up from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and three different econometric models to explain the volatility of crop income.
